Here are a few blogging tips that I managed to write combined with my experience and from what I read on other websites.
1. Select a niche or a range of limited topics :
It is very important for you to select a niche for your blog, since your readers would want to know what they get to read on your blog. Readers usually make it to your site from searches, and they expect a lot of information on the niche they were searching for. If you simply write about anything and everything under the sky, you will confuse and shock your reader with every post. You risk the chance of losing a valuable reader. If you can’t restrict to a niche, select a range of topics of the same category. Ex : Technology – Gadgets, Computers, Software. Each of these is a niche, but come under the common topic – technology.
2. Write Often :
When you write often, people know that your blog is an active one, and feel interested in coming back often. While taking time to write an article everyday might be a difficult task for those also working, you could write one post every Sunday. Write that one post every Sunday without fail. Once your readers know that you write regularly every weekend, they’ll know when to expect a post from you. But for heaven’s sake, don’t leave your blog unattended for long. Your blog will be interpreted as abandoned or dead, and you will lose returning readers. One example of a blog where the user posts randomly, and just one or two posts a month : http://markshuttleworth.com . I like his posts, but I just don’t know when to expect them. Result is that I seldom remember to check his blog out.
3.Be real and passionate about your blog : Make sure you put a genuine effort in writing your posts, and that you are actually passionate about what you’re doing, coz it really shows up in the posts you make.
4. Read other blogs : Go to sites like wordpress.com / www.blogger.com / www.icerocket.com/ and search for blogs of your niche. Read what others are writing, and how they are writing. Look at successful blogs and learn what they are doing, then look at the not-so-successful blogs and learn what they are NOT doing. This will help you get a clear picture of what you need to do to your blog.
5. Write posts that are useful : When you write on your blog, don’t be selfish and write only about yourself, and your life. People have already got enough in their lives to think about. They wouldn’t need details of your life. When people use the internet, they look for specific information. So, when a reader arrives at your blog from a search, you need to ensure they find the information they are looking for (based on your niche, that is). When they find something useful on your blog, there is a high chance they’ll come back later to catch more information on that topic.
